Plant Profiles - Bergenia

I am happy to demonstrate another plant earning my attention not just only for flowers but for all year round green leaves. It is Bergenia. That evergreen, rhizomatous perennial is ideal as a front border plant or as a ground cover one. With spread from 45 to 60 centimetres each Bergenia during spring time produce flower stems growing up to 45 centimetres and spray of pale pink, white or even red bell-shaped blooms. Bergenias can easily grow in full sun or partial shade positions in free-draining soil. As a fully hardy plant survives winter. The best planting and dividing time is through the autumn and spring season.

Good example of ground cover and front of border function. Look at the right down corner of the picture.

In the garden I look after I have lots of Bergenias growing in many places. They give amazing colourful spring display, showing their white, pink and red stems all together with spring bulbs. Following year I will find a time to show how to divide and plant new Bergenias, how to care them all the season. All with pictures of course.

Here green Bergenia gives good background for red and pink geranium flowers. All make good composition with nicely cut edge and black soil piping out between the plants.

Thank you.
